Remote Learning at Writhlington

General information

Students will be following the same curriculum and timetable as they would in school

Teachers will set work for all lessons on Google Classroom which students should complete during their normal lesson times.

Google Classroom can be accessed from any web browser (by logging into to gmail with their school email address and password) or from the Google Classroom app on their phone or iPad.

Students need to find their relevant class, then look for that lessons assignment (should be dated) and complete the work as directed (the video below shows what this should look like).

Once they have completed the work they should upload evidence (this could be as simple as a photo) to show that they have completed the work and click the submit button

What you should expect as a parent

All lessons (as per a students timetable) will set work on Google Classroom

Remote teaching will use a range of approaches as and when appropriate:

  • Resources for students to work through

  • Some videos made by teachers explaining tasks or modeling work

  • Some live lessons

  • Opportunities for students to ask teachers questions during the lesson

  • Quizzes and tests

Students will access google classroom using their school iPad (If they have any issues with technology or access to the internet then you should contact the school and we will support students with this)

Students must upload evidence of their work after each lesson and click submit on Google Classroom

Students will be assessed as per the normal school assessment schedule but tests will be adapted for home learning

All students should register with their teacher at the beginning of each lesson by logging on to Google Meet via their Google Classroom. The teacher will not necessarily take a formal verbal register, but they will record attendance on PARs and we will report on this in the normal way.

Where possible teachers will give feedback on work, this will be done on Google Classroom

If students miss lessons or do not complete work then staff will contact the student in the first instance and parents in all other instances.

If a student is unable to complete work due to illness then they should let the school know in the normal way.

Students work will be monitored and they will be contacted (in the first instance) by their teacher if they do not complete the work. If they do not complete more than one lesson parents will also be contacted.

Tutors will contact home twice per term to check on students well being, but please feel free to contact them if you have any concerns at any time

Parents evenings will continue as per the schedule but will take place online

Progress Leaders will contact home if there are any issues or concerns with students online attendance or work

Remote Learning FAQs

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Students will follow their normal timetable and our standard curriculum as soon as they are sent home.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Yes, students will continue with their normal lessons as the normal times as per their timetable and will continue with our high quality curriculum.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

Work should take about 5h per day, comprising of 6 x 50 minute lessons.

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

All online learning will be delivered through Google Classroom.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

If a student has any issues with accessing online learning please get in touch with your Progres Leader and we will provide you with a device and or internet connection.

How will my child be taught remotely?

Lessons will be set on Google Classroom with clear resources and instructions. Teachers will be available live at the start of the lesson and throughout to support and answer questions. Some lessons will be live on Google Meet. Every 4th lesson will be a catch up lesson to give students extra time and support with their learning. Work will be submitted by students on Google Classroom.

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

Lessons should allow students to work independently and teachers are online to support. It is not expected that parents will have to teach students but we really would appreciate your help making sure they attend every lesson, complete work and submit it. Please also ask them about their learning as this will help their consolidation of knowledge.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Teachers will provide feedback on Google Classroom and contact parents and students if work is not completed. Tutors and PLs will contact home at least twice each term or more frequently if additional support is required.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Teachers will assess students progress in the live parts of lessons and by looking at the work they submit. The school will set assessments as per our assessment schedule, but these will be adapted for online learning.

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

Please see the separate section below.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Work will be set as described above but without the live components.

What will happen if my home internet of the school network goes down?

Because we use Google any disruption to the school network would not affect our ability to deliver online learning. Because Google has hundreds of data centers all around the world it is very unlikely that our online services would be disrupted however if this did happen we would switch to another provider and inform parents and students of the new provision by text. If there are any problems with your internet then please let the school know and we will deliver resources to you at home.
